MOVE101 Introduction to Physical Activity & Exercise

Being physically active is first and foremost a joy. It is central to both physical and mental health. Unfortunately, everything from labour saving devices, to poorly designed urban environments, and passive entertainment has made leading a physically active life the exception rather than the rule. Exercise - planned physical activity for the purpose of improving function and/or health - is a necessity for most of us these days in order to lead a healthy life for as long as possible. In this series we look at what you need to understand to get the most benefit from the time you spend being active.

Module 2: Exercise Dose & Recovery

We are all fairly familiar with the idea of dose when it comes to medication - too little won't give us the desired benefits, and too much will be harmful. The same is true for exercise - do too little and you won't improve your strength, stamina, balance or whatever else your goal is. Overdo things, and you may loose all the great benefits exercise offers. Also, as with medication, what you have or, in the case of physical activity/exercise what you do, matters.

In this module you'll learn about the nature of physical activity/exercise dose, so you can better judge what and how much to do to get the outcomes you want and avoid the ones you don't.
